We took a nice long nature walk this morning guided by MacBeth. Just in case you are ever lucky enough to get an invite, when MacBeth asks you to go on a nature walk just say yes, you will not regret it.
Even so, I was a little skeptical when she mentioned a landfill. However, I trusted and it was the best decision of the week. Norman Levy Park is an long ago closed (because it was full) landfill which is now a nature preserve. Very cool no?
Now for the pictures.
The goats were penned up when we first arrived but during the course of our walk they were let loose to manage some weeds. The older kids got to see it.
While they were penned the little guys had a blast feeding them weeds. They were the cutest little goats so soft and friendly.
Now, here I expose my ignorance (isn't it nice of me to share my idiocy with you?) I said, when I saw these birds, "look at the little turkeys." They are guinea hens. Duh. I honestly had never seen one, but up close, just so you know, it looks nothing like a turkey.
The moms and the little people took the short walk to the top of the trail. The teens took the longer route.
This was the view from the top. It was sunny when we began but the clouds came and it was quite windy up there. Long Islanders might recognize that rectangle in the background as the Jones Beach theatre. That tower in the one on Ocean Parkway.
The windmill pumps water through the two man made ponds at the top of the landfill.
Yeah, we pretty much scare the heck out of anything living in the vicinity. It was pretty cute though, he was captivated by the ducks.
Some of the teens with us. Others proved elusive to photograph.
A little bridge over the pond. There were several species of fish in the pond providing much amusement.
I think they could have stayed there all day. Only one of them actually got wet which was nothing short of miraculous.
See those clouds? It sprinkled on us a bit but we were not deterred.
