So if a good friend who is knowledgable about these things asks you if you want to go camping and diamond mining with some other good friends what do you do? Even if you are not an nature mom by nature? You pack some wine and go. Particularly since one of the kids is doing earth science and geology is part of that.
I don't often get to upstate New York and I am avowed to remedy that. It's truly beautiful, especially with the foliage popping all over. Camping in late September is lovely, although cold at night (full disclosure: I slept in a cabin, the kids tented) and there were no crowds at all.
Herkimer Diamond Mine was interesting, educational and a great deal of fun. I really enjoyed the learning and the hammering.
As always it's better to go out and do rather than to sit around and imagine. I am so happy I jumped out of my comfort zone a bit and did this. I encourage all the "indoor moms" to make the leap as well, if I can do it anyone can.
