I’m on the hunt for a confirmation dress and it’s been a bit of a nightmare. My lovely 13-year-old daughter is being confirmed in the Latin Rite in late May and I am old school enough to think that girls should wear a white dress on their confirmation day and it should cover more than it reveals. Crazy, I am, just crazy to think that 13-year-olds in church should not be strapless. Even under a gown. I’ll go one better and openly declare that no one, even brides, should be strapless in church.

Thank you a million times for writing this! On the same hunt for my daughter. The choices were slim to none. Finally found a suitable dress at Dress Barn, and even then my daughter will need to wear a white shirt under the dress (!) because of the necklace. Scoured the internet, shops in our town and two nearby cities before we found something acceptable. Amazing that hemlines are so short!!
my condolences…I posted a similar article about my oldest…of course she was refering to her halloween outfit when she asked if would be ok for church. At 1st communion–she was beautiful…its been a battle since. I think each gets worse as they get older. I cannot imagine shopping for my 5 year olds confirmation dress.

what about Nordstroms? My nieces found lovely dresses there. Perfectly appropriate. Worse comes to worst, could you have someone make her a dress? You have some time…a simple girl’s dress can be made in a day or two. Put out the word, maybe a talented teen or college girl would love this opportunity. But check Nordstroms first 🙂 good luck and God bless your daughter!
I made 2 but not being a seamstress I didn’t enjoy the project. I ended up going to LDS Grand (I think it is latter day saints religion) as they wear white for their sabbath or something. It was nice to have a white dress that was modest. The sleeves were a little shorter than my taste but with a nice light white sweater they looked very nice.
I echo all of the above. I would recommend having someone make one for her. Or buying something that is close to what you want and altering it by adding sleeves, or a little bolero jacket or something like that. I have friends whose daughters had trouble finding wedding dresses that were not strapless, and that’s how they resolved the “problem”.
This is such a terrific column, Mary Ellen! I have such fun looking through vintage patterns…the ones for teens from the 30s-60s are so sweet and innocent. I think anything goes nowadays, so bring back the retro dresses! Find a someone who can sew up your daughters in dresses, since you will needs lots over the years!
This brings back such pleasant memories. I chose my Aunt Celeste to be my God Mother for Confirmation and she made me my confirmation dress. It was all white and made of eyelet. Very modest and I just loved it!! Do you know a seamstress because there are not many modest dresses out there. I will be praying that you find a dress that is pleasing to our Lord Jesus and his most precious Mother. Rose

Amen, Mary Ellen!!! I have noticed, in passing by bridal shops, that there is not one single dress on display that isn’t strapless. I had so hoped that the Duchess of Cambridge would have started a trend toward modesty, with her lovely wedding gown. So sad that it hasn’t.

First of all I want to say terrific blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I’ve had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I truly do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Thank you!
