We have play practice today so it seemed appropriate to take this from Twelfth Night. This is Feste’s song at the end of the play. His bleak account of the rain is overstated to make us aware of how bright and sunny the world really is.
Act V, scene 1…
When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came to man’s estate,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
‘Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came, alas! to wive,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came unto my beds,
With hey, the wind and the rain.
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day.
A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, the wind and the rain.
But that’s all one, our play is done,
And we’ll strive to please you every day.

I just wanted to say thank you for your special blog. My youngest child, Tommy, will be 3 in August – he has autism spectrum disorder, diagnosed last July. We had been working with a very good speech therapist, who was very negative and disapproving of me (I can only guess as to why, I believe it is either because I have 6 children, or because I homeschool some of them). About a month ago the therapist said something to this effect…”My frustration is that Tommy is not progressing as quickly as he should be if you were working with him at home and I am assuming that you’re not because you’re too busy, right?” That was my single most depressing moment since his diagnosis (although his diagnosis does not depress me at all…it was a time for broadening our perspective in regard to many things). This therapist never wanted me to be present during his sessions. I desperately wanted to find a Catholic Mom with many children who might have a point of reference, related to Autism, that could help me. That day I found your blog and read your article about the experts, and I immediately put the steps into motion to change therapists, and I bought five new – home based – books on teaching autistic children. I have shared your blog with my husband, children, parents, our parish, and with many other people. You help to put the loveliest face on Autism. I am writing this today because my husband was reading your posted poetry and wanted to show me the pictures of the children at the cottages. Thank you so much for sharing your Joy. By the way, we work with Tommy all the time, in everything we do with him…
