He’s here. Our little boy arrived a few
days early on January 24 at a healthy nine pounds, two ounces with a
head full of platinum blonde hair. He is a content baby, sleeping well
and generally ignoring the chaos around him. He has apparently fully
embraced as his eighth child motto, “Don’t complain, no one will listen
anyway.”
Brendan Michael, named after a
great Irish saint and his grandpa, is the first child I have been
blessed with in my 40s. I have now had children in my 20s, 30s and 40s,
and I must say it is getting harder. I do not bounce back the way I did
when my older children came. One gift that comes with this age, though,
is serenity.

Great column, Mary Ellen. My last baby was born just before my 40th birthday. Early in my pregnancy I had a scare and I wasn’t sure she would make it to nine months. It seemed as though every moment of every day during those times I spent praying, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change…” I often didn’t even finish the prayer, it was that first part I needed so much work on.
I think God granted that prayer as I too seemed to have found serenity with that baby. Yes, it’s age, and wisdom that brings that serenity, but it’s also grace from God.
Bless you and your sweet boy.

Hi. I lurk around your blog as often as I can, and always wait each Thursday hoping that yo’ll have another great column in TLIC, I have several posted on my bulletin board. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I look each day at this latest one (on the fridge)and I try to be inspired by it. I especially love the part that says about having the cleanest house and the most “outside commitments”…just remembering that part inspires me to say “NO” (the hardest phrase for a PTA Mom)!
I have only half as many children as you, for now, and I love reading all your thoughts. Thanks for sharing, and congrats on the gorgeous new edition!
