Waking up to a rainy Sunday usually gives me great pleasure. I like rainy days and a Sunday should be a day to stay home and enjoy family life.
Alas here in the bonny blue house Sunday has become another day consumed with the stress of being in two places at once and keeping track of kids all over town. This day, Ryan's baseball was cancelled due to the rain. It is a special needs league and since many of the children have physical disabilities they do cancel when the fields are wet.
Soccer is another story.
Erin played in a downpour. Soccer has become the newest cult to invade our country. Forget those fools in the orange pajamas chanting. Soccer has them beat in the brainwashing department. Thousands and thousands of parents give up thousands and thousands of hours of their time and drag their kids to fields all over America and harass them into kicking a ball into a net. And please don't give me the schpeel about athleticism, teamwork, scholarships, yada, yada, yada, I'm in a mood and I don't care.
Used to be a rainy day got you out of an outdoor sports commitment. You could be blessed by an unexpected block of free time. You could pour a second cup of coffee, pull out the newspaper and relax.
Not anymore. Sports have become the new religion in America and we, the parents, just rolled over and delivered our precious family time over to the new priests. The coach now controls when you eat, sleep and pray. He makes decisions that effect every aspect of your family's life. A person about whom you know nothing aside from his "defending the line" philosophy.
Well moms I propose we take back our Sundays. We shake off the fog that we have let settle over our perfectly good brains and stop nodding in agreement every time the coach says "I think we'll have an extra practice next week, five will be our lucky number." We'll stage a million mom march on soccer fields across America vowing to, once again on Sundays, worship in Church without feeling rushed, drink two cups of coffee, lounge in our pajamas an extra hour and speak in whole sentences to our spouse.
Let's start a movement dedicated to beginning the week in a prayerful, peaceful calm manner which will ensure a more productive and happy week for our families. Let's vow to spend some time on the weekend in the same room in the house with those we gave birth to.
Who is with me?

The British invented soccer. Of course it is played in the rain 😉

I don’t know why this post just came to my bloglines today? And not on Sunday!! But I’m with you! I’m all about Sunday and a second cup of coffee and no soccer in the rain. Although that said, I have it easy since my oldest is 7. And we’re not signed up for any teams beyond backyard baseball, football, and soccer. Along the same vein, our *diocese* has their youth intermural basketball league… on Sunday?? Which would be okay if you didn’t have to travel all.over.the.place. Go figure — you can’t even count on your own diocese to help keep Sunday Sunday. :s

You make it sound so easy!!! Only one of my four is involved in travel soccer but I have to agree with you about its Nazi-ish nature. You’ve given me something to think about!!!
Love to all the Barretts from the Giambalvos…

I am TOTALLY with you. We do not do soccer, though we love the sport, we just cannot have our family dominated by something so mundane.
Excellent post, thanks for standing against the tide:)
