Summer on Long Island. Are we lucky or what? We live in a summer kind of
place. Quite frankly I find Long Island a trial to bear in the winter,
all that sleet and freezing rain. But summer is a different story. There
are all those beaches and parks, nature trails and bike paths. All out
there bidding us to come and join the fun.

Fantastic article Mary Ellen. This is a topic close to my heart; one that is ignored or completely forgotten. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this post. Growing up on Staten Island in the 60s and 70s, my summertime activities were very similar to yours. I do my best to make sure my kids are close to nature. My older boy bushwacked his way home from his summer program (over three miles through woods and unfortunately, some private property. We had a little chat about that). I agree with the last bit of your piece about combating this Earth-worshiping attitude. My little one came home from his (public) kindergarten and informed me that he has two mothers, “you, and Mother Earth”. I firmly corrected him. Yes, you have two mothers: Me, on earth, and Mary, in heaven. It was a teachable moment for sure. Keep up the good work, I love reading what you write.
