School days, school days …
Didn’t you hate it when your parents sang that song beginning in mid-August? I was one of those odd children who actually liked the first few weeks of school; crisp, untouched notebooks and sharp pencils. Pens with caps and the smell of mimeograph in the air, it appealed to the organization-obsessed, office supply geek that I grew into as an adult. It usually took one or two math quizzes to cure me before I was longing for it to be over.

Well said! And something very important to keep in mind as my kids say, “So and so gets to ______. Why can’t I?” And we could in fact afford it and squeeze it into our schedule.

Very true. I think we should reflect on the reality that a lot of our kids and even the adult ones spend way too much time outside of the home that reduces the chance of the family having to sit together for a meal. Being home, eating in one table actually helps our relationship as we grow closer and get more involved in each other’s lives.

Great article, Mary Ellen! I’m sending it to my book club (we just finished reading “Tiger Mom” and your article is a perfect follow-up.)
