I predict that the popularity of New Age and occult practices will increase here on Long Island.
No I am not claiming to see into the future, nor am I reading tea leaves or flipping tarot cards. Mostly I am going by the proliferation of storefront psychics I have seen in my travels and the popularity of a new TV show called “Long Island Medium” that has been airing for a few weeks on TLC. The woman purports to be able to speak to the dead. This is problematic on a few levels, the most important being that it is a mortal sin to try to contact the dead. The other problem is that she is not really believable as a medium.

I struggle so much with my pagan roots and catholic religion and do not believe all pagan tradtions are evil etc. I think in Canada and Europe evangelization has changed very much to not impose European culture .Our archbiship talked much about this at outr church on Easter . people often cannot seperate culture from religious pratice and often mix them up .so many supposed pagan cultures were not even pagan they in fact worshiped one God . I so do not agree with people charging for the use of our freely given talents & especially spirtual gifts .I see it as not so much greed for money but recognition people now more than ever are lacking & dying from the worst diasese ever as Mother Teresa said of bing unloved people want attention be they catholic or new age etc. there are just as many catholics exploiting their gifts for power etc. it is not just a new age thing .I also beleive we call upon the dead all the time in our religion the saints are humans who have passed on we pray to them all the time for intercession purposes .for some christian denominations catholics appear pretty pagan don’t we with our relics , imagery etc. some places like Chimayo where people leave rosaries and prayer cards nailed to trees must seem like the work of the devil to some .
I’ve a cousin who reads tea leaves . at first I was happy for her beleiving she found her way in the world etc. then as I look closer no she has isolated herself , tells lies about her ancestory etc. and the reason why is she is lonely . she wants people to like her and love her and pay attention to her .
in our day and age the new age thing is it .
It is tempting at times I fall in and out of joining the pagan community because my catholic community insists if I do not appear uropean or american I am somehow not His catholic .
I’m worshiping my Catholic God by kneeling before a birch tree just as much as if were kneeling in front of a resin statue that had to come across the ocean from Italy or China polluting the air in order to do so . yet I have catholic homeschool mothers write me nasty notes telling me I’m not catholic .when your supposed loving catholic community shuns you it is hard at times to stay and fit in . I identify with Padre Pio very much when we are given much and use our gifts for His purpose isolation is often the cost .
