Our local historical society hosted a Civil War exhibition this morning. The even took place on a green in the village alongside a tiny train museum. The train museum was, to the delight of my little train maniacs, open and the caboose was also opened to explore.
I think we all have to appreciate the people who take the time to learn about the history of our great nation and dress up in sweltering costumes to educate us on a Saturday morning.
These ladies were telling Katie and I that 35 men from our small village fought for the Union Army. The women left behind had a very difficult time since they could not, by law, sign contracts, inherit or engage in business unless their husbands had left legal documents allowing them to do so.
This was a typical Union soldier's kit. I have to say I found the letters, reproductions of originals, very poignant.
